  2. i was spoiled early by having a 12w7 as my first subwoofer in my car and when i learned of the fathom’s existence, i’ve always wanted one. the only problem is that huge buy in on that fathom. i’m happy with my current svs sb2000 and was going to buy a second one to pair them but if i get a chance, i’m gonna have to consider auditioning that sb17 now. thanks for the review.

  3. I went with the SB-5000 because of the “smaller” size, and because there is no significant difference on paper with the SB-17.
It’s already huge, the SB-17 would have been too big for a living room.

Once properly placed and adjusted, it has made a significant upgrade over my B&W ASW610. It goes much deeper, and it sounds cleaner too.
The B&W has a pleasant coloration (which makes it slightly localizable), the SVS doesn’t have any of that. At first I was disappointed because of the lack of character, but in the end it just sounds better overall.

In my room I measured the SVS going down to 10Hz with ease, without any correction.
With room correction, I could achieve a flat curve down to 10Hz no problem.
It could probably go even lower than that, but under 10Hz it’s just wind honestly.

This sub is vastly overpowered for a home.
Even when trying to play ridiculously loud for a try, there is no audible distortion from the subwoofer.
The house itself start making strong vibration noises (doors, roof, windows, dishes…) while the subwoofer still seems to have headroom.

  4. I have a 2.2 system with SB17 & SB16 subs. They are amazing for music and movies. Be careful buying JTR since they need a lot of receiver power. My older Denon 3805 AVR created a loud ground loop “hum” in the RS2. Also, my subwoofer output is only 1.1 volts. JTR seems to want 4 volts+. My receiver barely pushed the RS2, so I returned it. No problems with the SVS’s.
